Perché scrivere di vampiri nel terzo millennio? Vampiri e licantropi costituiscono per lui metafore del mondo globalizzato, del conflitto tra razze e popoli, della paura dello straniero e del diverso, ma anche una satira del consumismo, il che giustifica l’attualità del tema.
Riccardo Gramantieri e Carlo Bordoni propongono due approfonditi articoli su Brian Lumley e sulla sua fortunata serie dei Necroscopi, in cui lo scrittore reinventa la figura del vampiro in maniera originale e credibile, facendone uno spaventoso parassita alieno. Con i suoi quindici volumi, “Necroscope” è una saga
cross-genere , che va dalla fantascienza alla storia di spionaggio, dal fantasy all’orrore. In Italia, purtroppo, è stato tradotto solo il primo volume,
Necroscope (1986), pubblicato da Bompiani nel 1993. Per Bordoni, Lumley è un «Ken Follett al suo meglio», ma con una fantasia sfrenata che pesca dai temi dell’oltretomba e del vampirismo.
