The story is set in the '20s, when the Hollywood film industry is the culmination of the artistic ambitions of country girls who had run away from home even per poter recitare in un film. La protagonista, Pearl, è una di queste ambiziose attricette ma, quando finalmente è invitata a una festa della produzione, diventa il pasto dei sanguinari vampiri che gestiscono gli affari di Hollywood. A salvare Pearl dall’imminente fine è Skinner Sweet, il misterioso ragazzo che l’aveva avvertita di non recarsi al party. In realtà Sweet è il primo vampiro americano, una nuova razza di spietati succhiasangue, capace di sopportare la luce del sole, a differenza dei vampiri europei.
Sweet, dopo aver trasformato la ragazza in una sua simile, la aiuterà a vendicarsi contro coloro che si sono approfittati della sua ingenuità.
Accanto alla storia di Pearl c’è quella di Sweet, della cui sceneggiatura si è occupato King. Un anziano scrittore racconta le vicende di un fuorilegge. Skinner Sweet, condannato all’impiccagione, riuscì a evadere ma, nel corso di una sparatoria, gli schizzò nell’occhio il sangue di un vampiro russo.
Risvegliatosi nella tomba, il bandito si confronta con i suoi nuovi poteri, fino a quando non viene nuovamente catturato dai vampiri europei e chiuso in una cassa. Per impedire il ritorno di Sweet i vampiri fanno sommergere la città dalle acque ma, alcuni anni dopo, egli riuscirà a riemergere grazie ad alcuni sommozzatori e avrà modo di attuare i suoi piani di vendetta.
Sweet non ha considerato, però, la progenie del suo nemico, che si muove ancora following in his tracks ...
Vampires Americans have some characteristics that distinguish them from their "European family", in addition to the aforementioned tolerance to sunlight, the moon gives them a new vigor and new moon when there are more vulnerable. American Vampire is an enjoyable comic book for lovers of horror, filled with frightening scenes and adrenaline. Albuquerque turns out to be a versatile artist, able to adapt to the atmosphere of the story. In the parts set in the Twenties, the design is modern and characterized by strong outlines and inking, while the story of Sweet and patiently painted and shaded strengthening, thus, the effect of "Old West".
Introvigne As noted, Sweet, although it represents the evil vampire and repulsive, he fought against the vampires of the origins, making the work of King is not entirely immune to the current cultural context where: a vampire as a totally negative character today is simply not credible (M. Introvigne - Future January 8, 2011).
