Harlan e Tesla si recano a Lucerna, in Svizzera, per incontrare Folker Krebbs che li informerà sull’oggetto delle indagini commissionate da Caleb Lost.
La facciata di tranquillità della cittadina è stata recentemente macchiata da un fatto di cronaca riguardante un barbone bruciato vivo da un gruppo di Naziskin. Il dampyr ancora non sa che proprio quest’atto ha risvegliato un antico male ormai dimenticato e, non appena sente il racconto di Else, comincia a mettere insieme gli elementi che lo porteranno a risolvere il caso.
Else ha raccontato di aver visto, durante un temporale, un uomo in mantello accanto al cadavere di una ragazza, e dopo pochi secondi l’uomo è scomparso assieme alla pioggia. La strada e gli abiti di Else erano asciutti, come se non fosse mai piovuto.
Cominciano a essere trovati altri cadaveri di donne private del cuore, e, proprio durante i festeggiamenti del carnevale, anche il dampyr e Tesla incontreranno the man with the mantle during a mock storm.
